Laurie Shea

About Me


Laurie Shea currently works for the Salt Lake City School District as the BTS Visual Arts Specialist at both Washington Elementary and Beacon Heights, teaching integrated visual arts to grades K-6.

Originally from the Pittsburgh area, Laurie graduated Magna Cum Laud from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Art Education with a minor in business.

 She came to Salt Lake City in the summer of 2014 bringing with her 18 years of art teaching experience.  Ms. Shea started her career teaching at Boyce Campus Middle College where designed and taught a variety of “out of the box” arts to high school students deemed to be at risk for dropping out of school. Along with her regular art classes she was able to provide her students many opportunities to connect with of the local arts community, like the Carnegie Museum, The Warhol Museum, and Society for Contemporary Arts, etc. Some of her students went onto intern at The Mattress Factory Installation Art Gallery and others became professional artists. In addition, Laurie taught studio classes for Woodland Hills High School, teaching a variety of studio courses from ceramic, jewelry, painting, drawing, and printmaking.

The last 6 years of teaching in Pittsburgh, Ms. Shea taught Elementary Art for Woodland Hills in Pittsburgh. Laurie was able to write and receive several grants for her school expanding her students’ art experiences, collaborating with resident artists from the Pittsburgh Film-makers / Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.  

Since she started teaching in Utah, Laurie has collaborated with Sandy Brunvand from the University of Utah with a successful AWFK Science /Art grant working with fourth grades students from both schools. In addition to her BTS contractual obligations, she was the lead artist in the new City Library Marmalade Branch mural project, which involved 8 schools and hundreds of students from Salt Lake City School District.

Shea loves to incorporate a multitude of the arts in her teaching. Laurie has a passion for all of the arts. Along with the visual arts, Laurie has performed for over 20 years playing Americana music. She is multi-instrumentalist and a singer- song-writer receiving positive reviews in both Sing out and Bluegrass Unlimited magazines for her Indie release of “Good-bye to Hugh”.
